DAY 10 - The Blue Whale
We had covered a lot of ground that first week.
Amy was my best friend and other half, my mirror, evil twin, and biggest cheerleader. Amy has always opened a very specific part of my brain and there is a power that can be harnessed when we are together. This power, to date, has yet to be tapped to it’s fullest potential despite the fact that we always had a new master plan in the works. When I think of all the best days of my life Amy is in most of them.
With Misha; Amy’s current commitment, out of town we had had 10 days to lay around and talk. I had missed a huge part of her life since she had moved here. Wherever here was. I had wanted to go a lot of places in my life. The Czech Republic was never one of them. But this was the place that Amy had sold all of her belongings to come to. None of us knew anything about Prague when she had gone.
We were informed by Amy that:
* Czechoslovakia had just come from under Communist rule 5 years ago.
* The 1st President elect was an artist.
* The cost of living was 1/5th of that in the states
* That for fellow artists Prague was said to be akin to Paris in the 20’s.
I knew little more than that when I got on the plane – But I knew what I needed to. That I would never regret going and that I would only be better for having gone.
Upon Misha's we would spend our days out in the city like bad kids sent out to run the streets until dinner time.
Our booty was good on this day! We dug through our bags of thrift store treats. I had bought 3 antique Czech bibles from the early 1900’s. They were ornate and only 6 inches in length. The covers were made of wood with ornate engravings. This would be the thing that I collected on my trip, I decided. I would get an even 12 and pass them on to my children or something. Eastern European thrift stores - I highly recommend them!
Amy noted that my acclimation to Czech culture was coming along swimmingly.
I was already carrying my own toilet paper in my purse. The aforementioned toilet paper was not even in my purse but in the grocery bag I was carrying with me for any “extras” I found along the way. When my braids had started to come undone, I found black electrical tape to be a suitable solution to the problem. I had done this randomly before bed one night, but had freely walked the city streets with tape in my hair for 2 days now.
There were a lot of things that did not seem to matter in this city. Not to say that Czech people did not care about personal appearance. A lot of the people my age were hipster city kids like anywhere else. But I saw enough beaver-skin coats on the tram to give myself some slack on the particulars. And in the end - this place was kinda weird. Since, sufficed to say, I didn’t even know where I was.
To accompany the electrical tape I had taken to wearing a couple of pairs of tights & long-johns under a pair of daisy dukes. I don’t recall what I had on this day - Day 10 – But if I were betting I’d go with this long-john / short shorts combo with the same burgundy sweater that is in my passport picture. I loved that sweater.
So: Tape in my hair, Daisy dukes, Combat boots and a Trench coat. Got it?
All of this to say - I was looking Fine to be sure!
All of that to get to this:
He came up and said something the specifics of which are unclear. He sat down with me or both of us (again, unclear). He was BEAUTIFUL. In one fluid motion he was just there at my table. The best looking guy I had ever seen in person. His name was Yirka
He had a flyer in his hand.
He was DJ'ing at a club tonight.
No, he was going to see a DJ at a club tonight.
“…really cool – if you would like to come”, he continued.
“Can my friend come to or does this just get me in?
“She can come I guess; but I’m asking if you want to go with me”
Wow - I totally missed that.
Who know or cares what I said after that….
We would meet at the Globe coffeehouse/bookstore and then go to the rave or what ever it was.
I got asked out by the best looking man I have ever seen on Valentines Day while looking like a "Dukes of Hazzard" extra. Was this the Emerald City? The specifics were unclear.
